How it works

Open Hide confidential information in Tools and choose a document from the app or from Files.

Choose what to hide
Fillstep lists what it found: emails, phone numbers, ID, passport and tax numbers, card numbers, IBANs, names, addresses, dates of birth and signatures. Tick what goes.

Preview and keep the copy
Check the preview page by page, then keep the new PDF. Your original stays as it was.
Removed, not just covered
A black box drawn over text can leave the text in the file, where anyone can copy it out. Fillstep writes a new PDF in which the details you chose are gone.
It finds the repeats too
When you hide a value of four or more letters or digits, Fillstep also finds its other whole-word mentions on every page, so an account number on page one and page four both go.
Done on your device
Scanned pages are read with the device's own text recognition. Nothing is uploaded while Fillstep searches the document.

- A page with hidden details is saved as an image of the page; if it had selectable text, the remaining text is added back invisibly so it stays searchable.
Questions and answers
How do I black out a Social Security number in a PDF?
Open the PDF in Hide confidential information. Fillstep finds the number by its shape and its label; tick it, check the preview and keep the new copy.
Is a black rectangle on a PDF safe?
Not always. Many apps draw a box over the text and leave the text underneath. Fillstep removes the chosen details from the new file instead.
Is the original PDF changed?
No. Fillstep saves a new PDF and leaves the original untouched.
Can I redact a PDF on a Mac with Fillstep?
